Helier Cheung
English BA, 2008
Helier Cheung is breaking news editor with The Washington Post in London. While completing her degree in English at UCL, she was features editor for UCL’s Pi magazine and received an arts and humanities faculty scholarship.
After graduating she joined the Civil Service Fast Stream programme, working on projects including the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. She then joined the BBC’s journalism trainee scheme, with roles as a news editor and writer for BBC News Online in London, Singapore and Washington, as well as a stint as its Hong Kong correspondent, reporting on the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in Washington DC and protests in Hong Kong in 2019. Her reporting on the 2018 Thai cave rescue was recognised by the Society of Publishers in Asia in the breaking news category.
