Guest Speaker Bio

Dame Clare Marx 

Medicine MBBS BSc, 1977 

Dame Clare Marx is the former President of the Royal College of Surgeons in England and former Chair of the General Medical Council. 

She  became a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at St Mary’s and St Charles’ London in 1990 before moving to work at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust in 1993 for the next 20 years, becoming Associate Medical Director for appraisal and revalidation in 2013. 

She chaired the Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialist Advisory Committee for the Royal College of Surgeons and co-authored the first competency-based curriculum in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.  

In 2009 she was she was elected to the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, where she chaired the Invited Review Mechanism from 2011 to 2014, when she became the first woman in the history of the college to be elected President. She was elected President of the British Orthopaedic Association in 2008 and went on to Chair the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management until 2019, when she was the first woman to be appointed Chair of the General Medical Council. She stepped down from the role last year following a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. 

Clare received a CBE for services to medicine in 2007 and was a dame (DBE) in 2018.
